Activity 13 — The Translation Exercise
Time: about 75 minutes. Submit: written text plus a sketch or image.
Choose one traditional element from your own context — a pattern, song form, proverb, ritual object or craft technique. Preferably one you have a genuine connection to.
- Document it. Where is it from, who makes it, when is it used, what does it mean? Mark honestly where your knowledge runs out.
- Find the grammar. Write three to five rules. What would someone who knows this tradition say is wrong if you did it incorrectly?
- Identify the meaning. Why did this exist? What did it do for people?
- Translate. Sketch a digital version keeping the grammar and meaning while changing the material, connected to your issue. Upload the sketch.
- Check. Show it to someone who grew up with this and report what they said — does it read as belonging to the tradition, or as a costume? If you could not find anyone to ask, say so and explain what that tells you.
