Metadata is often called the “Digital Storyteller” of an NFT because it contains all the important information that gives the token its unique identity and meaning.

The Metadata is a JSON file that includes:

  • Name and description of the NFT
  • Image or media URL (where the visual content is stored)
  • Attributes / Traits (such as rarity, category, color, or special social cause tags)
  • Creator information and royalty settings (how much the creator earns from future resales)

While the NFT token itself lives on the blockchain, the actual media files and metadata are usually stored off-chain for cost and speed reasons. The two most popular decentralized storage solutions are:

  • IPFS (InterPlanetary File System) – the most widely used, content-addressed and decentralized.
  • Arweave – provides permanent storage (“pay once, store forever”), which is ideal for long-term social impact projects and cultural preservation.

The SINFT platform automatically handles best-practice storage for you, ensuring your social impact NFTs remain accessible and permanent.

Understanding metadata is essential because it transforms a simple token into a rich, meaningful digital asset with story, value, and purpose.
