  • Learning Introduction

Welcome to Lesson 1 of the Citizenship Education Framework course.

Citizenship is much more than having a passport or knowing the laws of your country. It is about rights and duties, but also about belonging, participation, and values. It is about actively contributing to your community and making a positive difference in the world.

Today's citizens also participate in digital spaces — where communication, collaboration, and creativity are shaping public discussions and driving social change.

In this lesson, you will explore the meaning of citizenship education, understand why it is important in the 21st century, and discover how international frameworks from the Council of Europe, UNESCO, and UNICEF support it globally.

    Learning Outcomes

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

    •       Explain what citizenship education means and why it matters.

    •       Identify the three dimensions of citizenship education: knowledge, skills, and attitudes.

    •       Describe how international organisations (CoE, UNESCO, UNICEF) promote citizenship education.

    •       Analyse a real-life case of youth participation in decision-making.

    •       Reflect on your own experience and role as an active citizen.
