Section outline

    • Adair treats analogy as the engine of imagination and serendipity as a trainable practice rather than luck — with the boundary stated plainly: analogies transfer a principle, copying transfers a surface. This page also sets out the case for responsible creativity, and why novelty carries no moral guarantee.

    • All creative work borrows, so the real question is whether you are doing it well and honestly — which means telling inspiration, remix, homage, copying and appropriation apart. You will build a personal inspiration board from eleven different kinds of source, and run three tests that resolve most hard cases about using cultural material.
