People volunteer for many different reasons, and there is no single "correct" motivation.

Some want to help address issues they care deeply about, while others hope to meet new people, gain experience, or explore future career paths.

Common motivations include:

  • supporting a cause you believe in;
  • learning new skills;
  • meeting people from different backgrounds;
  • becoming more involved in your community;
  • gaining international experience;
  • building confidence and leadership;
  • giving back after receiving support yourself.

Many volunteers discover that they receive as much as they give.

Alongside contributing to society, volunteering often helps people develop practical skills such as communication, teamwork, project management, intercultural competence, and digital literacy. It can also increase confidence, broaden perspectives, and open doors to future educational or professional opportunities.

Reflection

Think about your own motivations.

What would encourage you to volunteer?

Which cause or issue matters most to you?

There are no right or wrong answers. Your motivations may also change over time as you gain new experiences.
