Every time you search, like, comment, share, or purchase something online, you leave a trace. These traces — your digital footprint — accumulate over time into a detailed picture of who you are, what you believe, and what you do. This picture may be seen by employers, universities, governments, advertisers, or strangers — often without your knowledge or consent.
Digital footprints are not inherently negative. A thoughtful, positive digital presence can open doors. A careless or harmful one can close them. The key is awareness and intentionality.
There are two types of digital footprint to understand:
• Active footprint: information you deliberately share — posts, profile data, uploaded photos, comments, reviews.
• Passive footprint: data collected about you without explicit action — location data, browsing history, cookies, app usage patterns, purchase behaviour.
As you watch the TEDx talk, focus on these questions:
• What surprised the speaker most about what her digital footprint revealed about her?
• Which type of footprint — active or passive — do you think is more difficult to manage, and why?
• What practical steps does she recommend — and which one could you start applying today?
