Understanding the difference between symptoms and root causes helps participants avoid quick conclusions and superficial solutions. Instead of asking only what is happening, they will learn to ask why it is happening, what conditions allow it to continue, and which deeper social, economic, cultural, political, or institutional factors may be involved.
By the end of this lesson, participants will be able to look beneath the surface of a local social problem and begin mapping the causes that contribute to it.
